Observance of ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’

11 February 2017, Thiruvananthapuram: Breakthrough Science Society in association with Kerala State Science and Technology Museum organized a programme to observe ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ on 11th February 2017, at Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, PMG Junction, Thiruvananthapuram. A felicitation ceremony to honour Dr. Archana Pai, Faculty, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research [IISER], Thiruvananthapuram, for her contributions in the detection of Gravitational Waves, considered to be the most significant scientific discovery of the century, was also held on this occasion. Convention against curtailment of research funding and growing intolerance

A convention against curtailment of research funding and growing intolerance was organised by Breakthrough Science Society, Kerala chapter on 7 Dec, 2015 at Achutha Menon hall, Ernakulam. Inaugurating the convention Prof Babu Joseph, former Vice Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology criticised the move of the central government in curtailing the funds for scientific research. He said that the directive by the government to raise funds from private sector will hamper the growth of scientific research in the country. Dec 11, 2014 - Seminar on “Should superstitious practices and black magic be legally proscribed? Justice Dama Sheshadri Naidu of Kerala High Court inaugurated the seminar. Justice K.Sukumaran, Dr.Babu Joseph (Ex. Vice Chancellor, CUSAT), G.S.Padmakumar, Adv.B.K.Rajagopal, Adv.E.N.Shantiraj and Francis Kalathungal spoke. The seminar explained the need of a law to ban the superstitious practices and black magic. The seminar opined that inculcation of scientific temper from the schooldays itself and a strong science movement to spread the cult of reason are some of the necessities for the successful implementation of the law. The programme was organized by the Ernakulam District Chapter of BSS in association with Democratic Lawyers’ Forum.

Dec. 20, 2014 - One day workshop for science activists was organised by the Pathanamthitta district chapter of Breakthrough Science Society.

Thiruvananthapuram
Preparatory meeting for All Kerala Science Conference at Thiruvananthapuram

A preparatory meeting was held at the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum on December 9, 2014, for the conduct of the first All Kerala Science Conference. The conference is planned to be held from Feb 20 to 22, 2015 at Thiruvananthapuram. The meeting was presided over by Mr.P.Radhakrishnan, former Deputy Director, LPSC, ISRO. Mr.Benny Joseph, District coordinator of BSS delivered the welcome speech. Mr.G.S.Padmakumar, President, Breakthrough Science Society, Kerala Chapter explained the aims and objectives of the All Kerala Science Conference. Dr.P.P.Rajeevan, BSS state executive committee member presented the tentative programme of the conference. After the deliberations on the conduction of the conference the meeting elected a reception committee with the following office bearers:

Seminar on Crystallography
As part of observance of the International Year of Crystallography, Breakthrough Science Society, Thiruvananthapuram District Chapter organized a Seminar on Crystallography on 20th December 2014 at Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, Thiruvananthapuram. The seminar was inaugurated by Mr.Arul Gerald Prakash, Director, Kerala State Science and Technology Museum. Dr.P.P.Rajeevan, executive committee member of BSS Kerala chapter presided over the function. Mr.G.S.Padmakumar, President of BSS Kerala chapter who spoke at the inaugural function stressed on the importance of such seminars in generating interest in basic sciences among students. Dr.Rajendra Babu, Retired Professor of Physics, M.G College Thiruvananthapuram delivered a lecture on ‘Evolution of Crystallography as a tool for understanding properties of matter’. Dr.Sam Solomon, Associate Professor, Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram delivered a lecture on ‘Crystallography in different branches of science – Recent developments’. Mr.Shaji Albert (District organizer, BSS) delivered welcome speech and Mr.P.S.Gopakumar (District organizer, BSS) proposed vote of thanks. Breakthrough Science Society, Thiruvananthapuram district chapter organized a seminar on ‘Evolutions in Nanotechnology – Challenges Ahead’ on 17th January 2015 at Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, Thiruvananthapuram as a part of the seminar series being conducted in connection with Kerala State Science Conference scheduled from February 20 to 22, 2015 at Thiruvananthapuram. In this seminar Dr.K.B. Jinesh, Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram delivered a talk titled: ‘Is there enough room at the bottom?’. The seminar was inaugurated by Mr.Arul Gerald Prakash, Director, Kerala State Science and Technology Museum.
